Organic Steel Cut Oats

Toothsome and creamy at once, our Organic Steel Cut Oats are worth the few extra minutes. The resulting slightly nutty porridge is excellent served sweet with maple syrup or savory with meat, salt and herbs. Oats are heart-healthy and high in soluble fiber (the kind that helps reduce LDL, or 'bad', cholesterol) plus vitamins and minerals.

Cooking Instructions

Boil 1 cup water and stir in 1/4 cup steel cut oats with a pinch of salt. Bring back to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 20 to 30 minutes, until desired thickness. Remove from heat and enjoy! Try serving steel cut oatmeal with nut or fruit butters, fresh fruit, or maple syrup and cinnamon.

Blueberry Pecan Baked Oatmeal

Serves 9

  • 3/4 cup Farmer Direct Organic Steel Cut Oats
  • 1/2 cup pecans, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 Tbsp. butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a 9-by-9-inch baking pan, combine oats, pecans, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, syrup, egg, butter and vanilla. Pour milk mixture over oat mixture; shake pan to distribute. Evenly sprinkle blueberries on top. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, until top is golden and mixture has set. Remove from oven and let stand 15 minutes before cutting into 9 squares for serving.
